It is estimated that at 70-80 million Americans own at least one firearm. A recent Gallup poll indicates that concern over personal safety is the most common reason given for owning a gun.
But what happens if a law-abiding citizen is actually forced to use a gun to protect him/her self, a loved one, or personal property? There will be an investigation – and potentially a criminal trial. Even an eventual acquittal provides no guarantee that the “victim” or his/her family members won’t sue in civil court.
Many homeowner policies specifically exclude firearm use – even in self defense – as a covered exposure, deeming it to be an intentional act. That leaves the gun owner personally liable for legal expenses, bail bond costs, and any judgments awarded through a civil action.
Starr Wright USA has partnered with Rockwood Programs to provide an insurance product specifically designed to fill this coverage gap. The Firearm Liability policy provides comprehensive coverage and an advocacy defense for gun owners who use their firearm in self-defense.
Liability limits range from $50,000 to $1,000,000 and annual premiums start at just $135.00.
Is coverage available in all states?
Yes, coverage extends to all states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.
Do you have to have a list of household members for the policy (named insureds)?
No. An insured is defined as the Policyholder named on the Declarations as well as a resident of the household of the Policyholder on the date of the occurrence, provided such resident is related to the Policyholder or under the age of 21 and in the care of the Policyholder.
What about accidental discharge outside the home?
Yes, the “act of self-defense” policy definition includes an accidental discharge of a firearm while hunting or while otherwise handling a firearm.
What does the firearm theft cover?
In the event a firearm legally possessed by the insured is lost, stolen or loaned out and subsequently used to cause bodily injury or property damage by someone other than the Policyholder, the policy will respond. Coverage is subject to the limits shown on the Declarations.
What is the claims process?
You can report a claim or ask a coverage question on the 24 hour program Hot Line at 888-748-6227. You will need to provide your Policy Number when you call. The policy number is located on the Firearm Liability ID Card that was included with your policy documents.
