Well, it's October, which means many of us bear witness to an annual rarity: full-grown 350 lb. linebackers sporting pink like it's going out of style.  No, they are not just wearing pink because their buddy Johnny said it was cool.  They are wearing pink in observance of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Every October, countless organizations, associations, and individuals step up their game in promoting awareness and education regarding breast cancer and help raise funds for research.

Chances are we all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer.  It is a very scary yet very real aspect of life.  However, there are more ways than one to help protect oneself.

  • Awareness and Education - One of the first steps is always awareness.  Those who take the time to educate themselves about breast cancer stand a much better chance from the get-go.  Know the signs of breast cancer because you can't catch it early if you don't know what you are looking for.
  • Regular Check-Ups - Of course, even if you know what to look for, you won't catch it early if you aren't looking.  So women should perform self-checks regularly.  Additionally, according to the National Cancer Institute, women in their 40s and older should have mammograms every 1 to 2 years.
  • Prepare Financially - Unfortunately, hospital bills are extremely expensive, especially when it comes to cancer treatments.  This is why every family should always prepare for the financial worst.  In fact, as unpleasant as the thought may be, part of this financial preparation includes securing proper life insurance in order to protect one's family in the event of a worst case scenario.  You can watch a video testimonial on the LIFE Foundation's website about how a simple life insurance policy allowed a dad to be a dad after his wife passed away in a battle with breast cancer.

Help Out

If you would like to contribute to the cause, there are many ways to do so.  A great place to start is at the National Breast Cancer Foundation website, where you can find information on donating, fundraising, and even volunteering.  Thanks to all of you out there doing your part!
